An African research translation institution transforming evidence into healthier communities, stronger systems, and lasting impact.
Utafiti Wellness Research Association (UWRA) is an African research translation institution dedicated to bridging the gap between scientific evidence and real-world health impact. We exist to ensure that research findings reach communities, inform policy, strengthen health systems, and improve lives across Africa.
Our name — Utafiti, meaning "research" in Swahili — reflects our commitment to evidence as the foundation of everything we do. We are not simply a research organization, a training institution, or an NGO. We are a research translation institution — a bridge between knowledge and action.
We work across the full research-to-action continuum: generating evidence, synthesizing knowledge, translating findings, strengthening capacity, influencing policy, and engaging communities. Our work is rooted in Africa, guided by communities, and driven by a deep commitment to health equity.
Five attributes that define our institutional identity and approach.
We don't just generate evidence — we ensure it reaches the people, policies, and systems that need it most.
We work alongside communities, co-designing solutions that are relevant, acceptable, and sustainable.
We build strategic alliances with governments, universities, NGOs, and development partners to amplify impact.
We study what works, for whom, and under what conditions — bridging the gap between research and practice.
We are an African institution, grounded in local realities, with a global perspective on health and development.
Every decision we make is guided by a commitment to measurable, sustainable impact on health and well-being.
The principles that guide everything we do.
To translate scientific evidence into community impact through research, implementation science, knowledge translation, capacity strengthening, and strategic partnerships.
An Africa where evidence informs every health decision, every community has access to quality care, and every person enjoys the right to health and well-being.
Our guiding philosophy — from knowledge to impact — defines how we work and why it matters.
"Evidence to Action" is more than a tagline — it is our institutional philosophy. It reflects our conviction that scientific evidence should never remain inside journals or academic institutions. Instead, evidence must be actively translated, adapted, and applied to improve health and well-being.
This philosophy guides every aspect of our work. We generate evidence through rigorous research. We synthesize and translate it into accessible formats. We engage communities as partners. We strengthen capacity to use evidence. We influence policy and practice. And we measure our impact continuously.
Our commitment to "Evidence to Action" means that we are not satisfied with knowledge alone. We are driven by outcomes — healthier communities, stronger health systems, informed policies, and lasting societal transformation.
